Today’s younger children are exposed to different languages and they typically learn them faster than adults. However, the benefits of foreign language teaching for primary school\u00a0students are\u00a0in\u00a0question.<\/p>\n

Children are highly adaptable, so they are not\u00a0perturbed\u00a0by grammar rules and\u00a0learning a new language is often very easy for them. This is in contrast to\u00a0adults, who typically need to\u00a0devote their entire time to learning a new language to achieve\u00a0mastery within a shortened time frame.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0globalization has led to the greater importance of\u00a0multilingualism,\u00a0parents are more interested in the idea of\u00a0their kids learning more than one language. At present, the best way for parents\u00a0is to enroll their children in a school that offers foreign language courses; however,\u00a0most primary schools do not offer\u00a0these courses yet. With the\u00a0increase in demand for foreign language learning, though, more schools are considering the idea.<\/p>\n

Advantages of Teaching Foreign Language Courses<\/strong><\/p>\n

Given the idea that children learn language faster, foreign language courses should ideally be taught from a young age. Starting early provides\u00a0children\u00a0with a greater chance to attain a mastery of other\u00a0languages as they grow older. Experience has shown that\u00a0children from non-native-English-speaking countries, who have learned their native language and English at the same time, have developed a\u00a0proficiency in both languages. Studies have also revealed that children become smarter if they are challenged to learn different languages at\u00a0a young age.<\/p>\n

Potential Problems<\/strong><\/p>\n

The foremost\u00a0issue\u00a0to consider\u00a0is the potential for\u00a0information overload, as primary school students\u00a0are already learning several subjects\u2014adding a foreign language could\u00a0make effective learning\u00a0untenable. Additionally, other skills could be sacrificed if a\u00a0student’s attention is further divided. Some students will\u00a0excel in language learning, while others learn better in other fields; therefore, it is unfair to require language learning of students who are genuinely uninterested in the subject.<\/p>\n

Continuity is currently another issue, as only a few high schools and universities\u00a0offer foreign language courses. Even if a child\u00a0has acquired basic language skills at a young age, the opportunity for necessary enhancement might not be available\u00a0as they grow older.<\/p>\n

Logistical Issues<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aside from the effects upon\u00a0students, primary schools are also managing concerns. Most primary schools in the United States typically\u00a0employ\u00a0only one or two teachers from another country\u2014unless the school is dedicated to students from immigrant families\u2014and these teachers cannot\u00a0provide full coverage due to\u00a0timetable clashes. While specifically hiring teachers to teach a foreign language is a possibility, the school might not be able to absorb what is usually a high expense. Furthermore, a translator or a foreign language teaching assistant might\u00a0also be necessary in bigger classes to ensure that students are not\u00a0left out.<\/p>\n

If a school weighs up the matter\u00a0and concludes\u00a0that foreign language courses are necessary for primary school students, then it\u00a0should introduce the course regardless of\u00a0the potential problems.
