And why is it important for children to develop their emotional intelligence?<\/p>\n<p>Emotional intelligence, or emotional quotient (EQ) is a \u201cperson\u2019s ability to identify, evaluate, control and express emotions.\u201d It helps us communicate with others, negotiate situations and develop clear thought patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Leading psychologist and author,\u00a0Daniel Goleman\u00a0argued in his\u00a0<em>New York Times\u00a0<\/em>bestselling book,\u00a0<em>Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ<\/em>\u00a0(1996), that EQ is a more important measure of how successful a person is, than Intelligent Quotient (IQ). People with high IQ do not always have social intelligence and may lack the skills to be successful in many current work environments.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0Forbes article\u00a0in 2013, \u201cresearch carried out by the Carnegie Institute of Technology highlights 85 percent of financial success is due to skills in \u2018human engineering\u2019 including your personality, ability to communicate, negotiate and lead.\u2019 And only 15 percent is due to \u2018technical knowledge.\u201d People with a strong EQ make good leaders and managers and are better at working collaboratively in team environments.<\/p>\n<p>If we foster EQ with our children when they are young, we are setting them up to communicate well, develop strong relationships, negotiate tricky situations, be leaders in their field and\u00a0according to TalentSmart\u00a0even earn more money.
